King Tubby and the birth of dub: the mixing desk becomes an instrument
How a Kingston sound engineer turned the mixing desk into an instrument, and invented a genre.
Osbourne Ruddock, known to everyone as King Tubby, was not a musician in the classic sense. He was an electronics technician from Kingston.
In the seventies he turned his studio into a laboratory and made the mixing desk his main instrument. The result is dub: a way of treating music that strips it down, takes it apart and puts it back together, giving silence the same weight as sound.

The sound of emptiness
Before Tubby, mixing was a technical job, not a creative one.
He understood that taking things away creates tension. Dropping the vocal all at once, making the drums vanish for two bars, leaving only the bass: these are choices, not accidents.
His studio in Waterhouse, a poor neighbourhood of Kingston, became the centre of Jamaican music. Lee “Scratch” Perry and Bunny Lee brought him their tapes, and he handed them back transformed.

The first experiments
Tubby works as a sound engineer and begins to manipulate the instrumental versions: he strips out the vocal, adds echo. The language of dub is born almost by accident.
The Waterhouse studio
He opens his home studio. Much of the equipment is modified by hand. It becomes the reference point for Lee Perry and Bunny Lee.
Dub becomes a record
The first albums conceived as works in their own right appear, no longer as B-sides. Dropouts and reverbs turn extreme.
Beyond Jamaica
Sound systems carry dub into the United Kingdom. Tubby's techniques start to seep into European pop and electronic music.
The end
On 6 February Tubby is killed outside his home. He was 48. His legacy was already worldwide.
The technique: echo, reverb, dropout
Tubby works with gear he modified himself: amplifiers, equalizers, echo units built or repaired by hand.

The same sense of space runs through fifty years of music. The technology changes, the idea does not.

The roots
Dub was born from a practical need. Kingston’s sound systems wanted instrumental versions the DJs could toast over.
Tubby took those versions and pushed them to the extreme.
The legacy
His influence can be heard in trip-hop, in ambient, in the electronic music of Burial, in grime. Anyone who leaves room to breathe between one sound and the next is applying one of his lessons.
