Funk is a rhythmic decision before it is a genre. Around the middle of the sixties James Brown shifts the weight onto the first beat of the bar and lets the rest of the band turn around it: the bass stops accompanying and becomes a line of its own, the guitar plays short and dry, the horns arrive as percussion.
The consequence lands twenty years later. Once the first samplers become affordable, those records turn into the most looted material in the history of recording: two bars of drums are enough to build a whole track. We are interested in both lives here, the original one and the one as raw material, and above all in what happened between the two.
